12 stories about boats, birds, sounds, the sweet potato, plastic and especially, people.
Take a rowboat on Thompson Park Boating Lake and lap up the amazing stories within artist Luke Jerram’s thought-provoking and immersive artwork, Crossings.
Crossings is an installation artwork by Luke Jerram in collaboration with BBC Radio 4 producer Julian May, which was commissioned by Compton Verney for its first presentation during summer 2022.
The installation consists of 9 rowing boats on the water. Each of the boats plays audio of stories from around the world. In choosing a story and rowing out into the water for 30 minutes, participants are taken on an audio journey, transported to another life and circumstance. The action of rowing and the live sounds this action creates, blends with the recorded audio, to help create a truly engaging and immersive experience.

Please arrive 10 minutes before your allocated time slot; latecomers can not always be accommodated.
Restrictions:
- Maximum of 4 people per boat
- Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.
- Life jackets are to be worn by all under 16 and all non swimmers regardless of age
- Children under the age of 12 months are not permitted on the boats.
- No dogs allowed in the park
Bad Weather:
In the event of bad weather, the boating lake will close, and any tickets purchased for that day will be cancelled and refunded. We will cancel by no later than 9.30am on the day of your booking, based on the forecast for that day, except in rare circumstances where there is unexpected bad weather, and we have to close partway through the afternoon.
