A short dance film by Casson & Friends, commissioned by Burnley Words Festival

Men in Burnley was created by Casson & Friends following a week-long residency in Burnley in Spring 2025. The artists met with community groups across the town to explore the question: What does it mean to be a man in Burnley?

The resulting 10-minute dance performance was shared with the community members who had taken part in those conversations. Its success led to the creation of this short film, which captures and extends that dialogue. Every scene and movement in the film is drawn directly from things said by people in Burnley.

Filmed on location in places mentioned during those conversations, Men in Burnley reflects local identity, unheard voices and unspoken conversations.

Purpose and Context
Burnley Words Festival commissioned this project as part of its ongoing work to commission and programme art that reflects the lives and priorities of people in Burnley. The film aims to spark discussion, particularly around masculinity, identity and community, and to reach audiences beyond the festival itself.

Sharing the Film
The film is free to share. We can provide:

  • A copy of the film for screening or community use
  • A TV screen and headsets for venue display
  • A discussion points pack for groups who wish to explore the themes further
  • Support for sharing the film as a social media partner

We are particularly interested in working with venues, cultural organisations and community or men’s groups who would like to screen and discuss the film.
