Open Call: Creative Writing Inspired by a Favourite Book
We’re inviting poetry and creative writing inspired by a book that is meaningful to you.
This could be a piece that responds directly to the book, draws on its themes or style, or reimagines a character, moment, or idea. The approach is open, and we welcome personal, reflective, playful, or imaginative responses.
Selected pieces are displayed as part of a growing exhibition alongside touring artworks celebrating Burnley’s love of reading. As the exhibition travels across venues, new work will continue to be added.
We welcome submissions exploring a wide range of tones and subject matter, while being mindful that the work will be encountered by people of all ages and backgrounds.
What you can submit
- Poetry or creative writing or a personal reflective essay
- Your piece should fit on one side of A5
- Please use a clear typeface (minimum size 12)
Who can submit
- Open to anyone
- We particularly welcome submissions from people living in Burnley and the surrounding areas

What happens next
Submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis, and selected pieces will be added to the exhibition as it continues to grow.
The project was first unveiled on World Book Night at Burnley Central Library, bringing together local writers, artists, and the community to celebrate a shared love of stories. This ongoing call ensures new voices can continue to be part of it.
